True Cost the Movie – a documentary about the real price of fast fashion and Community Discussion

Can Northern Michigan support a full-loop textile system and become an economically viable industry that uses local sources? Can natural dye-plant growers, small farmers raising fiber from sheep, alpaca, yak, llama and goat, and small business owners, processors, and existing networks that support the different segments in the system sustain a full-loop textile system? Through discussion can we find the gaps that are current impediments to achieving 100% locally made products?

True Cost, the movie, is an opportunity to learn more about the reasons why there is an effort to move toward bringing textile manufacturing back to Northern Michigan. The price of clothing has been decreasing for decades, while the human and environmental costs have grown dramatically. The True Cost is a groundbreaking documentary film that pulls back the curtain on the untold story and asks us to consider, who really pays the price for our clothing?

Following the screening will be a panel discussion with people in the textile loop, such as textile designers, garment makers, community organizers, and others.
